Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has been officially proclaimed an Honorary Citizen of the Greek island of Spetses, recognising his many years of philanthropic support for the island and its community.
The honorary citizenship was conferred during a special ceremony held at Spetses Town Hall on Saturday 18 July 2026. The event was attended by Mayor Evgenia Fragkia and members of the Municipal Council, Vice President of the Greek Government Kostis Hatzidakis, Deputy Regional Governor of the Attica Islands Nikolaos Papageorgiou, President of the Anargyreios and Korgialeneios School of Spetses Yiannis Aisopos, together with local officials and members of the community.
The honour recognises Sir Stelios’ longstanding commitment to improving life on the island through the work of the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation. Over the years, the Foundation has supported a number of important initiatives in Spetses, including the donation of two modern fire engines, the renovation of the island’s Health Centre, and the Food from the Heart programme, which provides food assistance to vulnerable residents through the Municipality’s social welfare services.
The Foundation also funds a long-running initiative that provides monthly financial support of €1,500 to doctors serving on 50 small Greek islands, including Spetses. The programme currently benefits around 90 doctors and helps strengthen healthcare provision in remote island communities.
