Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge

2 – 6 July 2019

Organised since 2014 by the Yacht Club de Monaco, in collaboration with the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Solar & Energy Boat Challenge is unique in the world.

More than a century after the first international powerboat meetings were launched in 1904, the YCM is reviving a tradition by leaving the field wide open to innovation and the imaginations of young engineers, working hand in hand with experienced manufacturers. Their goal is to develop alternative propulsion systems, using only clean energy sources to power the yachting of tomorrow. A real technological challenge to meet the energy needs of the leisure boat and shipping industries and the accompanying and environmental prerogatives.

The Stelios Philanthropic Foundation is happy to be sponsoring the participation entry of a Greek team called OCEANOS , consisting of 6 young engineers from the National Technical University of Athens . The Solar & Energy Boat Challenge consists of 3 different categories and Oceanos is to compete in the Energy Class.

Oceanos NTUA is a non-profit, research team, consisted of undergraduate students of School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, representing National Technical University of Athens in international competitions.

sea_cadets_2018_1_1               New Sea Cadets yacht TS Sir Stelios Commissioned into service at London ceremony

Last week , on the 13th of September, hundreds gathered at St Katherine Dock to witness the naming and commissioning of a new addition to the Sea Cadet fleet, kindly provided by the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation.

Businessman and philanthropist Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, best known for the easyJet low cost airline as well as his 'easy' family of brands, was joined by Sea Cadets in the ceremony to name the new green and blue ship. He said, "I am honoured and delighted that my philanthropic foundation has been given the opportunity to help out young people who go to sea.  I wish the Training Ship Sir Stelios and all her future crews a fair wind and God speed for bright and successful times to come."

The Rustler 42 yacht - so named because it is 42 feet long - will enable more cadets to take part in transformational voyages at sea and enjoy the thrill and challenges of sailing first hand. Through a range of bursaries Sea Cadets endeavours to offer all it's cadets, regardless of their background, to embark on this trip of a lifetime.
