Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, founder of easyJet and serial entrepreneur, this afternoon made good on a pledge of 200,000EU declared in May 2010 to help fund a new environmental research center on the island of Cyprus.   (Photographss: Stelios presents the cheque to Andreas Pavlou President of the Village Council Committee of Pedhoulas and inside the Centre.)

Based in the town of Pedhoulas - birthplace of Stelios' father, Loucas – the Stelios  Environmental Centre in Pedhoulas will welcome thousands of students from the island as well as international research teams to study the flora and fauna of the Troodos Mountain area to better understand this unique ecosystem and how to protect it.  The Stelios Environmental Centre in Pedhoulas is the first of its kind on the island of Cyprus and is housed in the town's former elementary  school.

Stelios remarked "In keeping with my father's dream to establish a centre of learning in the town of his birth, I am proud to be a part of this effort.  The doors can now open to a Centre which not only will bring needed visitors to this small community but will also further our understanding of Cyprus' natural heritage - and how to protect it.  This donation fully reflects the principles of the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation in its support of education and the environment."

The 200,000EU donation is funded personally by Stelios through the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, which is dedicated to the three E's - Education, Entrepreneurship and the Environment.  Additionally in Cyprus - through the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation - Stelios supports island-wide entrepreneurial activity with the Stelios Award for Business Cooperation in CyprusStelios is also a founding member of CYMEPA (the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association) dedicated to raising awareness - and protection - of the marine environment.
