The Stelios Award for the Young Entrepreneur of the Year in Greece - 2013 - has been formally launched today by easyJet founder, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou.

For the sixth consecutive year, the serial entrepreneur's Stelios Philanthropic Foundation will be awarding a €50,000 prize to the young Greek entrepreneur who demonstrates exceptional drive, determination and business ability.

Since its inception, this award has been won by a variety of businesses in sectors as diverse as recruitment, tourism, on-line application software and eco-friendly goods and services. The deadline for the submission of applications is 15 October 2013.

Entrants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • have operational management and ownership of at least 50% of the company
  • be based in Greece
  • have been established between 2008-2012
  • have at least 5 employees in the last 2 years
  • have an annual turnover circle in excess of €300.000
  • be no older than 40 years

The three stage assessment process consists of the Foundation drawing up a shortlist of ten, from which three finalists will be chosen to make a presentation to Sir Stelios, who will then pick a winner. He/she will be announced by Sir Stelios at the annual Kouros Awards run by Leshi Epihirimatikotitas.

Recent winners include Simply Burgers, Zoo.gr, Fasmetrics and Fereikos-Helix. Last year's winner, Rebecca Pitsika's People for Business provides integrated HR solutions to businesses while mentoring the unemployed on all the possible options open to them. The company was singled out by Sir Stelios for its steadily growing profits, ability to improve profit margin and for its ingenuity in achieving goals set for the previous 12 months.

Sir Stelios said:

"Starting and growing new businesses has never been so important as it is today. Our current national economic emergency makes it vital for new vibrant companies employing new workers and serving new customers both home and abroad, to replace those jobs already lost or under threat.

"I know we can rely on the entrepreneurial dynamism of our young businessmen and women to deliver the ideas and entrepreneurial acumen that will lay the foundations for tomorrow's new stronger Greece. My team can't wait to start assessing what I know will be a high quality field."
