Alumni jet in from around the world for weekend fundraiser

17 September 2012

Dozens of alumni from across the world flew into Monaco for a reception hosted by easyJet founder, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou.

The near 130 guests, coming together for the second year running, met there as part of a three day alumni event to raise funds and network with old friends. The gathering brought together former Cass students from around Europe and as far away as the US, India and Australia.

Sir Stelios, who studied for an MSc in Shipping, Trade and Finance at Cass, hosted the evening reception on the terrace of his Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, which supports education, entrepreneurship and the environment as part of his efforts to encourage those who have benefitted from a world-class education to "give something back."

Among the guests and speakers was Cass Dean Richard Gillingwater, who said:
"We are grateful to you all for taking the time to support Cass and for travelling to Monaco to attend this event. As our greatest ambassadors our alumni are a tribute to Cass and its success."

Director of Development and External Relations, Paola Barbarino, said:
"We were delighted to welcome alumni from 20 different countries in Europe and around the world. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Sir Stelios for hosting the reception once again. As one of our most famous alumni, he is a wonderful ambassador for the School and an inspiration to our students"

Later on Corrado Agusta, MSc Real Estate 2007, hosted a complimentary post-reception party at his Philippe Starck designed club A'Trego in Cap d'Ail.

Earlier in the day, alumni gathered at the Novotel in Monte Carlo to hear a masterclass on 'Hedge funds in the post-crisis world'.

The speakers were Lee Robinson, Founder, Director and Portfolio Manager of Altana Distressed Assets Funds, Dr Nick Motson from Cass's Faculty of Finance, and Cass EMBA alumnus, Natalie Westerbarkey who is Director of Citi Securities and Fund Services.

Other activities which took place across the weekend included visits to the Salle Garnier opera house and the Oceonographic Museum.
