A record number of 116 applicants for the 2015 bi-communal awards received by the Stelios foundation as it prepares to open a second bi-communal café in North Nicosia

16th September 2015

Participation of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots is greater than ever in this year's Stelios Bi-Communal Awards as 116 bi-communal teams have applied, marking a new record for participation as the number has quadrupled from previous years.

The new record number is due to the operation of the first Bi-Communal Café located on the corner of Palias Ilektrikis & Eptanisou 57, the excellent promotion and publicity received by the Awards but also for the positive political climate that has developed on the island over that last months. The remarkable record number of the participants during the last seven years of the Stelios Bi-Communal Awards confirms that the Bi-Communal Café managed to play a key role as well as to bring closer Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, strengthening the element of trust and cooperation between them. The awards for the winners will be given by Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou on the 30th of October at the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation property, in Old Nicosia Town.

This year the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation strengths its activities by promoting and supporting bi-communal cooperation, after the investments made in Nicosia and in Limassol, by purchasing another property located on Ferah street, north of green line and only 10 minutes walk from Ledra street. The third property of the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation will also operate as a Bi-Communal Café to develop the networking between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. Additionally, free food will be offered to people in need, under the charity program "Food from the heart". The new house of the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, which is located opposite the St. Luke"s church, will be renovated and it is expected to be in operation in 2016.

For the history, the first Bi-Communal Café operated one year ago in 2014, when the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation had invested in the purchasing of the property, in Old Nicosia Town on the corner of Palias Ilektrikis & Eptanisou 57. The charity program, "Food from the heart" is also located in the same building. The first house of the Foundation which was inherited to Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou from his mother is in Limassol and from there, in 2013 the implementation of the charity program "Food from the heart" began.
