PRESS RELEASE 22 OCTOBER 2018
STELIOS PHILANTHROPIC FOUNDATION

78 APPLICATIONS HAVE ALREADY BEEN SUBMITTED FOR THE DIRECT FINANCIAL SUPPORT INITIATIVE THAT WILL GIVE 5,000 € TO EACH FAMILY WHO LOST A MEMBER FROM THE WILDFIRES OF EASTERN ATTICA .

WE ARE STILL RECEIVING APPLICATIONS UP UNTILL THE 2ND OF NOVEMBER

The process of receiving applications for the grant of direct personal allowances to the closest relatives of our fellow human beings that were lost in July 2018 by the deadly fires in Eastern Attica continues until the 2nd of November.

A total of 78 applications have so far been submitted.
The total amount of the donation is estimated to amount to € 500,000.

In particular, a lump-sum of € 5,000 will be given by a bank deposit to the nearest or up to the second-tier relative , of any deceased person.
The order of priority begins with the spouse (including those who have a cohabitation agreement), followed by the oldest child - if this is over 18 years old and has a bank account - whereas if there is no adult child, the sum will be given to the father of the deceased. If this is not feasible, then financial support will be given to the mother. If there is no living first-degree relative, the allowance will be paid to his or her oldest sister or brother (second-degree affinity).
The amount of € 5,000 will be given to the closest relative based on the above mentioned order and will not be divisible.
This series has been chosen for practical reasons, but the Foundation's hope is that there will be a fair distribution of the amount among the relatives to benefit the whole family. If the same person is the closest relative to more than one of the deceased, then that person will receive all the amounts corresponding to him.
Regarding the procedure, applications will be submitted in writing and in person by the closest relative during all working days (Monday to Friday) from 08:00 to 12:00 on the second floor of the Foundation , located in the center of Athens (Euripidou 10, Athens, PC 105 59). The submission process will be running from Friday the 5th of October to Friday the 2nd of November. Payments will be made by bank transfer to a bank account of the closest relative and will be completed by the end of November for all those who will have successfully completed and submitted their application .
Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou said: "I have been monitoring all the donations and announcements that were made from the government, other institutions and companies for the past 3 months. We gave 100,000 euros to the Red Cross just a few hours after the fire. Now is the time for a more immediate and tangible move for the people who lost their relatives. It is the only loss that is can never be replaced with anything ".
THE PROCEDURE :
The Foundation has appointed a three-member committee that will audit each applications and the supporting documents. The final decision for each beneficiary will be taken by Stelios Haji-Ioannou himself after the whole procedure is completed.
If the closest relative can not attend in person, then he / she may be represented only by another close relative with a written attorney to complete the application.

cyprus_awards_2018

Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has today announced the 50 bi-communal teams (50 Greek-Cypriots and 50 Turkish-Cypriots), each of which will receive cash prizes of €10.000 (total this year is €500,000). This year, nearly 700 Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots collaborated and submitted their applications for Stelios Bi-Communal Awards 2018, to win one of the 50 cash prizes that are offered by Stelios Philanthropic Foundation. Since 2009, the total value of the awards that were granted to bi-communal collaborations adds up to €3,250.000.

The aim of Sir Stelios’ philanthropic act for the past ten years, is to encourage cooperation between the members of the two communities in Cyprus and to establish lasting peace on the island.

The Awards Ceremony this year will only include the winning teams and their spouses and will be held on the 3rd of October, at the newly acquired Headquarters of the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, on 5 Markou Drakou street, Nicosia, which is walking distance from the Ledra Palace.  The winners will be sent special access passes for the event directly.

The winners have been selected from various backgrounds including business, sciences, arts, sports, NGO work and “partners in life”.

The selection was done in such a way in order to give 60% of the prizes to new applicants and the rest is divided between past winners and past applicants who have not won before. The idea is to encourage new forms of cooperation but also encourage people to keep applying year after year.

“Partners in life” is a category that stands out for backing the overall downward trend in applicant numbers in other categories. This year the applicants in the “Partners in life” category saw  an increase in applicants of 2.5 times since last year. As in previous years, a generous proportion of the awards is given to this  special category of human cooperation.

Following the record year we had in 2017 with an all time high number of applicant , I have to report that the number of applicants is down (as you would expect from the negative climate). However focusing on the positive side,  still having 700 people apply is a good result for lasting peace on the island. My favourite category which is the partners in life, is the only category that has shown an increase year on year with now giving 16 awards this year vs 9 last year to partners in life. At least at a human level the relations between the two communities are improving. We will be there to keep working for lasting peace on the island for the long run!”
